Cobham Hall Museum

Detail Information

Located in the Wisemans Ferry Inn Hotel in the main street of town.
Set high on the hillside overlooking Wisemans Ferry’s vast lands is Cobham Hall, the grand manor Solomon Wiseman built for his second wife Sophia in 1826. Wiseman and his family elaborately entertained many a distinguished visitor and welcomed travelers on route to Sydney and the Hunter Valley.

The Sydney Basin sandstone walls are still intact with mortar made from cooked oyster shells and the convict hand huened rafters are exposed with some of the original shingles and plaster lining.  It is one of the few buildings left standing in Australia of this age. Kate Grenfell’s novel “The Secret River” is somewhat based on Solomon Wiseman and Cobham Hall.

Hall is now known as the Wisemans Inn Hotel.
